European Energy has inaugurated Northern Europe’s largest combined solar and battery park in Kvosted, Denmark. The hybrid asset includes a 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), capable of supplying electricity equivalent to the daily consumption of approximately 18,000 Danish households.
The Kvosted project combines an existing utility-scale solar park with large-scale battery storage to create a fully integrated hybrid asset. The battery system has been operational since December 2025. The project demonstrates European Energy’s approach to enhancing asset value through storage integration and flexible system operation.
The battery enables electricity generated during periods of high solar output to be stored and delivered to the grid when production is lower, including evening and night-time hours. In addition, the system provides flexibility services to the grid by absorbing excess generation during peak production periods. This improves revenue stability, reduces exposure to curtailment and negative pricing, and strengthens the asset’s overall investment profile.
“By integrating battery storage into the existing solar park in Kvosted, the project has been transformed into a hybrid asset with greater operational flexibility and a broader revenue base. This strengthens the long-term value and resilience of renewable energy projects,” says Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy.
Hybridisation through battery storage is becoming increasingly relevant as power systems with high shares of wind and solar generation require more flexibility. For renewable assets, storage integration supports higher capture prices, access to ancillary service markets and improved alignment between production and demand. These characteristics are increasingly important in transactions involving operational assets and late-stage development projects. As a result, battery storage is becoming an integral part of utility-scale renewable portfolios, both as a standalone asset class and in combination with generation capacity.
European Energy currently has a battery development pipeline exceeding 12 GW across multiple markets, including Denmark, Australia, Poland, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Baltics and Italy. The portfolio supports a wide range of commercial structures.
Facts about Kvosted battery system
The Kvosted battery system consists of containerised lithium-ion batteries based on LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry. The installation includes battery modules, a battery management system (BMS), cooling and fire safety systems, and grid-connected inverters enabling bidirectional power exchange.
The facility has been designed in accordance with applicable safety, environmental and operational standards, including noise and local environmental assessments.
At the end of its operational life, the battery system will be handled through established recycling and recovery processes, supporting material reuse and circularity.
