Ignitis Group and Vilnius University Strengthen Collaboration to Drive AI Innovation in Energy

Ignitis Group has signed a collaboration agreement with Vilnius University (VU), marking the start of a partnership focused on innovation and the application of artificial intelligence in the energy sector.

At the core of this cooperation is the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (MIF), which brings strong expertise in AI, machine learning, and data analytics.

By providing access to real-world energy data, Ignitis group will enable VU MIF students and researchers to develop and test new algorithms, explore advanced analytical methods, and apply their knowledge to real challenges.

The faculty already has a track record of successful projects in AI and data-driven research, and this collaboration will help scale these efforts further.

A key focus of the partnership will be on renewable energy forecasting.  By combining Ignitis group’s operational expertise with VU MIF’s research capabilities, the partnership aims to create practical innovations for a more resilient, secure, and sustainable energy system.

“In Lithuania, renewable energy production is developing very rapidly, and at the same time many challenges are arising. Our researchers and students are working on creating forecasting algorithms for individual regions, analysing their interdependencies, evaluating their impact on national forecasts, and determining margins of error in both the short and long-term perspective,” Dr. Jolita Bernatavičienė, senior researcher at the Institute of Data Science and Digital Technologies at VU MIF told The Voice of Renewables.

Beyond research and innovation, the initiative will also play a role in attracting and developing talent, giving students the opportunity to work with real data and contribute to forward-looking projects that shape the future of energy.

This collaboration is another step in Ignitis Group’s commitment to advancing innovation and fostering partnerships that deliver value for both society and the energy ecosystem.
