After synchronisation with the continental European networks, which took place earlier this year following decoupling from BRELL, the Lithuanian energy system continues to be consistently strengthened, ensuring its security and resilience.
The Government approved the amendments to the resolutions submitted by the Ministry of Energy, which supplement the electricity system synchronization action and measures plan and the list of synchronisation projects.
These amendments provide for the inclusion of measures aimed at strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure: improving physical, electronic and perimeter protection, installing drone detection and neutralization systems, as well as the acquisition and storage of reserve equipment and materials.
The inclusion of resilience measures in the list of synchronization projects grants the status of a project of national importance. These measures will be partially financed by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) financial support.
“The implementation of infrastructure resilience measures is necessary taking into account the regional security situation and real incidents, therefore we are taking a wide range of measures to ensure that critical energy infrastructure is maximally protected. Today’s decisions also strengthen our capabilities to finance the installation of such infrastructure and technical means with EU funds,” Acting Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas told The Voice of Renewables.
The plan has also been supplemented with actions and measures for the dismantling of electricity transmission lines with the Kaliningrad region and Belarus that were disconnected from the IPS/UPS system due to desynchronisation. On February 8, 2025 all remaining electricity transmission connections with Russia and Belarus were disconnected. The dismantling of cables on all sections of lines crossing borders has been already completed. The actions and measures provided for in the plan are intended for the dismantling of these non-functioning connections on the Lithuanian side.
The adopted amendments will help strengthen the security and reliability of the country’s electricity system, as well as reduce potential threats to national security interests.
