ABB expands DC power portfolio with acquisition of French power conversion specialist Advantics

ABB is strengthening its position in next-generation power systems with the acquisition of Advantics, a France-based specialist in Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based power conversion technologies. The transaction expands ABB’s Direct Current (DC) capabilities and supports growing demand for more efficient electrical architectures in sectors including data centres, industrial microgrids, renewable power generation and electric vehicle infrastructure. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, with completion expected by Q4 2026.

The acquisition comes as electrification accelerates globally. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), electricity’s share of final energy consumption is expected to increase from around 20% today to approximately 36% by 2035. As electricity demand rises, improving conversion efficiency and reducing energy losses across increasingly complex power networks is becoming a critical priority.

Advantics’ Silicon Carbide-based power conversion technology complements ABB’s existing DC solutions portfolio by enabling highly efficient, compact and intelligent power conversion systems. By reducing the need for repeated AC/DC conversion, DC architectures can improve energy efficiency, increase power density and support more flexible integration of renewable generation, battery storage and other distributed energy resources.

The acquisition strengthens ABB’s capabilities across the full power value chain — from electrical protection and distribution to digital control and system optimisation. Advantics’ technology will enhance ABB’s ability to develop advanced DC systems designed for applications where reliability, efficiency and space optimisation are increasingly important, including hyperscale data centres, industrial facilities, renewable energy projects and EV charging infrastructure.

Commenting on the acquisition, Massimiliano Cifalitti, President of ABB’s Smart Power division, said that the transition towards a more electrified and digital energy system requires new approaches to power conversion and distribution. He added that Advantics’ Silicon Carbide technology and engineering expertise complement ABB’s existing capabilities, enabling the company to accelerate the development of more efficient and resilient DC solutions for industries facing rapidly growing electricity demand.

Michal Elias, Founder and CEO of Advantics, said that Silicon Carbide technology is enabling a new generation of power conversion systems with higher efficiency and performance. He added that joining forces with ABB provides an opportunity to scale this innovation globally and contribute to the infrastructure required for the next phase of electrification and digitalisation.

Founded in Saint-Genis-Pouilly in eastern France, Advantics develops integrated hardware, firmware and software solutions designed to optimise power conversion performance in demanding applications. Its converter modules achieve efficiencies of up to 99%, supporting applications ranging from data centres and industrial microgrids to power generation and EV infrastructure.

ABB continues expansion through targeted technology acquisitions

The Advantics transaction follows a series of strategic acquisitions by ABB aimed at strengthening its position in electrification, automation, digital energy management and industrial technology.

ABB has pursued a targeted acquisition strategy focused on adding specialised technologies that complement its core businesses. Recent examples include the acquisition of Sevensense, a Swiss developer of AI-based 3D vision navigation technology for autonomous mobile robots, strengthening ABB’s capabilities in robotics and intelligent automation.

The company has also expanded its digital capabilities through the acquisition of Meshmind, an AI and software engineering company, supporting the development of artificial intelligence applications across ABB’s robotics and automation businesses.

In the electrification and building automation space, ABB acquired Eve Systems, a provider of smart home technology, enhancing its portfolio of connected building solutions. Earlier acquisitions, including Cylon Controls, strengthened ABB’s building automation and energy management offering.

Through these investments, ABB has focused on acquiring technologies that address major industrial trends, including electrification, digitalisation, automation and energy efficiency. The acquisition of Advantics represents another step in this strategy, targeting the growing need for advanced power conversion technologies as renewable energy, energy storage, electric mobility and digital infrastructure reshape global electricity systems.
